The vision for the Human Rights Navigator 1.0 collab is to enable volunteers to crowdsource the creation of open datasets related to human rights and use them to power a free web application that will enable users to compare human rights between locations. Human rights are diverse and complex, so our approach is to focus the first version of the app on navigating reproductive rights, including abortion rights. This is a highly-controversial area that impacts millions of US citizens, making it a timely and important place to start. The Human Rights Navigator V.1 is intended to support the following use cases:
As political and legal landscapes shift and fragment, the ability for citizens and custodians to stay on top of human rights is becoming an increasing challenge. This can be particularly important for people travelling between countries, and even for those travelling to jurisdictions within their home nation.
Stage 1: CONNECT
All applications built and/or hosted by the Data Collaboration Alliance observe the Zero-Copy Integration framework. The approach, which is a draft standard in Canada, eliminates databases and copy-based data integration from the development process. By eliminating copies, we are able to provide our members with a next-generation Data Collaboration Policy that includes rights to control access, custodianship, portability, and deletion of the data for which they are the rightful owner.
Users of the Human Rights Navigator will not be required to create an account in order to access the app and will be encouraged to access it via privacy-enabling browser technology. No web cookies will be maintained and no data from the app will be shared with 3rd parties. See our Privacy Statement.
